UMAN
Rebbe Nachman of Brezlov spent the last few years of his life in Uman, Ukraine and told his followers before his death that they should daven (pray) every Rosh Hashanna at his grave and say the Ten Psalms of the Tikkun Klali. He promised to pray for the success of any pilgrim who made this journey and to remember them forever. Each year thousands of Breslover Hassidim make a pilgrimage to Uman about three hours south of Kiev. Massacred first by the Poles (1768) and again by the Nazis, there were in 2005 perhaps 100 Jews living in Uman year round. There are now more than 40,000 who make the annual pilgrimage.
